BREAKING AP: Obama Clinches Nomination

Posted in the last five minutes:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Barack Obama effectively clinched the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, based on an Associated Press tally of convention delegates, becoming the first black candidate ever to lead his party into a fall campaign for the White House.

Campaigning on an insistent call for change, Obama outlasted former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton in a historic race that sparked record turnout in primary after primary, yet exposed deep racial divisions within the party.

The AP tally was based on public commitments from delegates as well as more than a dozen private commitments. It also included a minimum number of delegates Obama was guaranteed even if he lost the final two primaries in South Dakota and Montana later in the day.

Update [2008-6-3 13:51:35 by Josh Orton]: This story is whipping around Blackberries across the country. Hillary's campaign is trying to thread a needle between acknowledging this reality and not "conceding" to try to preserve some sort of leverage with the Obama campaign. But there are a lot of hours between now and the moment Hillary Clinton has to step on stage in New York, during which time more supers will come out for Obama (there's already a flood today and this story gives them more cover) and she'll likely lose two states. The 'leverage' she was hoping to preserve before conceding has started leaking out a large hole at the bottom of the bucket.

Considering McCain is loathed by large fractions of the Republican coalition lets aim a bit higher than that, eh? ;)

Bravo. Finally this pretended contest, that Hillary had a chance, is at an end. She never did and should have conceded a month ago. Instead, we are late into the general election, allowing McCain a head start.

However, if the Democrats ever permit McCain the ability to shake off his Bush credentials, we deserve to lose.

I am quite old enough to make those decisions myself.

I seldom use the term "bots" even though I often think it when behavior I see exhibited leads to that conclusion.

The Obama supporters I know in real life, my family, neighbors, children are not the obnoxious jerks I've run into on line-thank God-but they also seem blithley unaware of his shortcomings and lack of actual progressive credentials. I see so little he has actually accomplished and know how woefully inadequate lofty rhetoric is against Republican attacks.

Anyway, you guys are not running the world yet so I still have the right to speak as I wish.

Never had a chance? (none / 0)

She started out with great name recognition and a solid superdelegate lead.  Her biggest mistake was hiring Mark Penn.  Her second biggest mistake was not firing him sooner.  If she had actually dumped some real effort into the caucus states and planned beyond super tuesday... this might have been a very different race.

Of course, I am an Obama supporter and am happy with the outcome, but this was never a cake-walk or a sure thing for him.  Clinton is one hell of a campaigner and could have won this if not for a few key strategic blunders.

Peace.

Re: Never had a chance? (none / 0)

Most of her blunders can actually be grouped under the heading of irrational right wing attacks (against Obama). When Hillary joined McCain, it was the beginning of her downfall. In fact, at one point she went to the right of McCain on foreign policy, and scared the hell out most Democrats. Iraq is one thing, but bombing Iran is quite another. Most people are sick of the Neocons and what they have done to our country, and to she a major Democratic candidate follow suit was just too much.

Bye Hillary.

I agree...This is no longer about "teams" within the Democratic Party.  This is about assuring that McCain does not:  get a chance to pack the court; bomb Iran; further open the spigot for big corporate lobbyists; further diminishes Constitutional rights and liberties; further set the economy aflame, etc. etc.

This is NOT about who was mean to whom on either "side" or who's the bigger asshole.  There's an awful lot of work to do.  I look forward to working with folks supporting both candidates to do this essential work.  Our lives and those of our children depend upon it.  Mightily.

Re: Obama/Press lies? (none / 0)

Learn to read, the private commitments were tallied by the AP.  Obama and his campaign have nothing to do with it, they talked to the superdelegates themselves.

Re: Obama/Press lies? (none / 0)

so these are unpledged superdelegates who told the AP how they would vote but then asked them to keep it a secret?

SD's looking for the easy way out (none / 0)

The Supers wanted Hillary to make it easy for them and concede. The last thing they wanted was to have to make a public stand that might cost them votes from one side or the other.

Telling AP privately not to use their names but having them declare Barack the winner gives them cover to say they waited until there was a clear winner they are just uniting with the party behind the nominee. Like having your cake and eating it to. They get to climb on the bandwagon without pissing anyone off.

Guys, how many times does Obama get to mislead you with the help of the press before you learn your lesson.

This is no different than what Bush was doing with the WMD stories.

Really? press reports about superdelegates that Obama denied have killed a million people?

Gee, you don't have your priorities completely out of whack or anything.

(In case my subtlety slides over you: You should be ashamed of yourself. And I mean that ashamed. Not embarrassed. Ashamed.)

Re: BREAKING AP: Obama Clinches Nomination (none / 0)

Que: "It's not over!"  "No one has voted" "The media is sexist" "The media is in for Obama" and all the other narratives that the Clinton camp is still spinning, despite the fact that it IS over and they will at this point, most certainly hurt Obama in the GE.

I was so hopeful at the beginning of this campaign.  Now the good part (the GE) is going and I just feel like taking a nap.

South Dakota and Montana will give Obama about 17 delegates.  5 Montana supers will go to the winner there (almost certainly Obama), so only 11 or so others are needed today.

First of all, nothing is clenched until one of two things happens: either Sen. Clinton conceeds or the ballots are cast in Denver. This is a stunt that reeks of political calculation. Who are the 30 Super D's that apparently have endorsed Obama in the past hour?

by Misty Mountain Maggie on Tue Jun 03, 2008 at 01:48:49 PM EST

Keep telling yourself that. (none / 0)

I'm sure Huckabee and Romney said the same once McCain clinched the nomination on Feb 5th.

In the meantime, the Democratic party will move on with our nominee. His name is Barack Obama!!!

To be fair... (2.00 / 1)

McCain's delegates are all pledged delegates.  Obama's total includes superdelegates that could change their minds before the convention.

They won't though, and yes, our nominee is Barack Obama and it is good.

Re: BREAKING AP: Obama Clinches Nomination (2.00 / 6)

I feel like we're watching a boxing match between two heavyweight champions that's gone right into the twenty-fifth round, and one has just lost on a TKO.

This has easily been the longest primary season in history.  We have two strong contenders, and as much as I've been agonizingly frustrated by it, I'm forced to admire Senator Clinton's tenacity.  I'm pretty sure Senator Obama would not have fought as long or as hard, had their positions been reversed.  I hope that Senator Clinton has a place, either in the Senate or in the next administration, where she can put her talents to use.

I hope we can put the ugliness of the primary behind us as quickly as possible and coalesce behind the goal of installing Senator Obama as the next President and keeping the Straight Talk Express in the shop.

There's no need to hope that she has a place in the Senate. She has one. It's no consolation prize. It can be as much as she wants to make it.

I gotcha (none / 0)

I just like to remind people that being a United States Senator with a national following, a huge fund-raising/actiivist network and a high-media profile is not exactly the ash-heap of history.

From my point of view, she has the opportunity to use that Senate seat for all the things she didn't use it for during the Bush years: Leadership, passion, and making things better for the country.

wonderful news!!!!! (2.00 / 1)

At my salon in south Florida, a shipment of funky-styled Barack tee's arrived late last week, just in time. I am giving them to the customers, at no charge and many of them (who are wearing them proudly) were Clinton supporters.

It seems that many in the real world, with the exception of the diehards, are beginning to coalesce around the democratic nominee.

Will place another order tonight...onward to Washington.
